CHRISTMAS GIFT GUIDE

Best portable projectors UK 2026: a Christmas gift guide

Researched buying guide•By Smart Gear Vault•Updated 26 October 2026
Smart Gear Vault graphic: a portable projector beaming a picture, for our best portable projectors UK guide

A portable projector makes a lovely Christmas present: a 100-inch picture for film nights, sleepovers or the garden in summer, and it packs away in a drawer. The catch is that the cheapest listings on Amazon promise huge brightness and "4K" pictures they can't deliver. This guide sticks to branded smart projectors with honest specs, from about £130 to £649, and explains what to look out for.

How we chose: this is a researched buying guide, not a hands-on test. We haven't tested these projectors ourselves. We compared each maker's published specifications with its Amazon UK listing, checking the model, seller and stock, and looked at owner ratings. Prices were checked on Amazon UK on 26 October 2026. We dropped the XGIMI MoGo 3 Pro because it was unavailable on Amazon UK. Projector prices change often, especially around Black Friday, so check the latest price and seller before you buy.

1. Best portable projector overall

Nebula Capsule 3 Laser

Official video from Nebula UK on YouTube

Price: £489 on Amazon UK when we checked (26 October 2026), sold by AnkerDirect UK, dispatched by Amazon and in stock.

The Capsule 3 Laser is about the size of a large drinks can, and it's the one we'd give to most people. It has a laser light source rated at 300 ANSI lumens and native 1080p, so the brightness figure is a proper measurement rather than marketing. A built-in battery lasts for a 2.5-hour film, and it supports USB-C PD charging from a power bank. It runs Google TV with official Netflix and Google Cast, and its Amazon UK listing averaged 4.2 stars from 683 ratings. The cheaper Capsule 3 with an LED light source (200 ANSI lumens) was £378, sold by Object Distribution with only 2 left in stock. It's a good saving if you mostly watch in the dark.

Key specs

  • Brightness: 300 ANSI lumens (laser light source)
  • Resolution: native 1080p (1920 x 1080)
  • Picture size: up to 120 inches
  • Battery: about 2.5 hours of video, 8 hours as a speaker (Nebula). USB-C PD charging
  • Smart system: Google TV with official Netflix, Google Cast
  • Sound and weight: 8W Dolby Digital speaker, 898 g

Pros

  • Genuinely pocketable for a 1080p projector
  • Built-in battery
  • Proper ANSI brightness rating
  • Official Netflix and Google TV

Cons

  • 300 ANSI lumens still needs a dim room
  • Single 8W speaker
  • The battery won't cover a long film with the brightness up, so take a power bank

Best for: Film nights in the bedroom, the garden or on holiday, and anyone who wants a projector they can pack in a bag.
Watch out for: There are several Capsule models. Check you're buying the Capsule 3 Laser (or the Capsule 3) and not an older Capsule II or Mars model listed nearby.

2. Best budget projector

Aurzen Roku TV Smart Projector (EAZZE D1R)

Price: £129.99 on Amazon UK when we checked (26 October 2026), sold by Aurzen Direct, dispatched by Amazon and in stock. The listing RRP was £199.99.

If you want a big picture for well under £200, this is the cheap projector we'd buy, rather than one of the unbranded '18000 lumen' listings. It's the first UK projector with Roku TV built in, so BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, Netflix and YouTube are on the home screen without a separate streaming stick. Aurzen quotes 280 ANSI lumens, verified by the testing firm SGS, and native 1080p. It also does AirPlay mirroring from an iPhone, and its Amazon UK listing averaged 4.6 stars from 1,326 ratings, the most of any projector here.

Key specs

  • Brightness: 280 ANSI lumens, SGS-verified (Aurzen)
  • Resolution: native 1080p (1920 x 1080)
  • Picture size: 60 to 150 inches (Amazon listing)
  • Power: mains only. No built-in battery
  • Smart system: Roku TV, AirPlay mirroring
  • Sound and weight: dual 5W speakers with Dolby Audio, 2.1 kg

Pros

  • Excellent value
  • Roku TV includes the main UK catch-up apps
  • Honest, independently checked brightness figure
  • Huge number of good owner ratings

Cons

  • Needs a plug socket
  • Bigger and heavier than the minis
  • LCD projector, so expect less contrast than the laser models

Best for: A first projector for a bedroom, a student or a kids' film night on a budget.
Watch out for: You need to create a free Roku account to set it up. No HDMI cable is included.

3. Most flexible design

Samsung The Freestyle 2nd Gen

Price: £349 on Amazon UK when we checked (28 October 2026), sold by Richer Sounds and in stock. The £329 offer from 26 October has gone. Another Amazon listing for the same projector was £828, so don't pay that.

The Freestyle's party trick is its cradle. It tilts through 180 degrees, so you can point it at a wall or straight up at the ceiling for a film in bed, and it focuses and straightens the picture by itself. It runs Samsung's smart TV system with the Samsung Gaming Hub for cloud gaming without a console, and it has a 360-degree speaker. It's also the lightest here at 0.83 kg. Samsung's UK spec page doesn't give a brightness figure. Currys lists it at 230 lumens, so it's for dark rooms. Its Amazon UK listing averaged 4.3 stars from 74 ratings.

Key specs

  • Brightness: not stated by Samsung UK. Currys lists 230 lumens
  • Resolution: native 1080p (1920 x 1080), HDR10+
  • Picture size: 30 to 100 inches
  • Power: USB-C. Needs a separate power bank (USB-PD, 50W/20V or above) away from the mains
  • Smart system: Samsung Tizen, Gaming Hub, AirPlay 2
  • Sound and weight: 5W 360-degree speaker, 0.83 kg with stand (Samsung)

Pros

  • Projects onto the ceiling easily
  • Lightest projector here
  • Automatic focus and keystone
  • Samsung Gaming Hub

Cons

  • No built-in battery
  • Dimmest projector here
  • Sold by a third-party seller (Richer Sounds) rather than Amazon

Best for: Watching films on the bedroom ceiling, and Samsung TV owners who like the same smart system.
Watch out for: Check the seller and returns policy. It was £329 on 26 October, so compare prices before paying much more.

4. Brightest portable projector

XGIMI MoGo 4 Laser

Price: £649 on Amazon UK when we checked (26 October 2026), sold by XGIMI Official Store, dispatched by Amazon and in stock, returnable within 30 days.

The MoGo 4 Laser is the one to get if you want the brightest picture you can still carry around. XGIMI rates it at 550 ISO lumens from a triple-laser light source, nearly twice the Capsule 3 Laser's figure, with native 1080p and HDR10. A built-in stand rotates 360 degrees, the battery is rated for 2.5 hours, and two 6W Harman Kardon speakers give it the biggest sound here. It runs Google TV with licensed Netflix. It's new, so its Amazon UK listing had only 23 ratings, averaging 4.1 stars.

Key specs

  • Brightness: 550 ISO lumens (triple laser)
  • Resolution: native 1080p (1920 x 1080), HDR10
  • Picture size: up to 120 inches
  • Battery: up to 2.5 hours (XGIMI)
  • Smart system: Google TV with licensed Netflix
  • Sound and weight: 2 x 6W Harman Kardon speakers, 1.32 kg

Pros

  • Brightest projector in this guide
  • Built-in battery and 360-degree stand
  • Best speakers here
  • Comes with four magnetic colour filters

Cons

  • Most expensive pick
  • Heavier than the Capsule
  • Few owner ratings so far

Best for: Garden cinema nights and anyone who wants a portable projector that copes better with some room light.
Watch out for: XGIMI's MoGo 3 Pro was unavailable on Amazon UK when we checked, so ignore old deals for it.

Why to be wary of cheap "18000 lumen" projectors

Search Amazon for "projector" and the top results are often unbranded mini projectors at £30 to £110, claiming 10,000, 18,000 or even 25,000 lumens and "4K support". Some are fine for a child's bedroom, but the numbers are not what they seem.

ANSI lumens vs marketing lumens. Real projector brightness is measured with a standard method, ANSI lumens or ISO 21118 lumens, which averages readings across the whole picture. Inflated "lumens" figures have no agreed method behind them. A branded projector quoting 300 ANSI lumens will usually look far brighter than a cheap one claiming 18,000. If a listing doesn't say ANSI or ISO, assume the number is marketing. Aurzen goes a step further and has its 280 ANSI lumen figure checked by the testing firm SGS.

Native resolution vs "4K supported". "4K supported" or "4K decoding" usually just means the projector accepts a 4K signal and scales it down. What you see depends on the native resolution, which on cheap models is often 720p or lower. Look for "native 1080p (1920 x 1080)" in the specifications. All four projectors above are native 1080p.

Check returns before you buy. If you buy a cheap projector as a gift, check who the seller is and how long you have to return it. Amazon usually extends the returns window for Christmas purchases, but third-party sellers' terms can differ. Try it in a dark room as soon as it arrives, so you can still send it back.

How to choose a portable projector

Be realistic about the room. Portable projectors look best in a dark or dim room. In daylight even 550 lumens will look washed out, so think evenings, bedrooms and gardens after sunset.

Battery or mains? The Nebula and XGIMI have built-in batteries rated for about 2.5 hours. The Samsung needs a USB-C power bank away from the mains, and the Aurzen needs a socket.

Pick a smart system you like. Built-in apps save buying a streaming stick. If your projector's apps don't suit you, plug in a stick like the Fire TV Stick 4K Max.

Sound. Built-in speakers are fine for a bedroom. For a garden film night, pair a Bluetooth speaker.

Something to project onto. A smooth white wall works. A cheap pull-up or tripod screen helps a lot outdoors.

FAQs

Which portable projector should I buy?

For most people we'd pick the Nebula Capsule 3 Laser. It has a built-in battery rated for about 2.5 hours, 300 ANSI lumens, 1080p resolution and Google TV with official Netflix, and it was £489 on Amazon UK, sold by AnkerDirect UK, when we checked on 26 October 2026. If you want to spend less, the Aurzen Roku TV projector was £129.99, but it needs mains power.

How bright does a projector need to be?

Look for a measured ANSI or ISO lumens figure. Portable projectors in this guide range from 200 ANSI lumens (Nebula Capsule 3) to 550 ISO lumens (XGIMI MoGo 4 Laser). That is fine for a dark or dim room, but no portable projector will look like a TV in a bright living room in the daytime. Draw the curtains, or watch in the evening.

Why are some projectors advertised with 10,000 or 18,000 lumens?

Those are usually marketing figures, not standard measurements. Proper brightness is measured in ANSI or ISO 21118 lumens. A cheap mini projector claiming 18,000 'lumens' will be far dimmer than a branded model quoting a few hundred ANSI lumens. If a listing doesn't say ANSI or ISO, treat the number with suspicion.

Is a '4K supported' projector actually 4K?

Usually not. '4K supported' normally means the projector will accept a 4K signal and scale it down to its own, lower native resolution. Check the native resolution in the specifications. Every projector in this guide is native 1080p (1920 x 1080).

Can I use a portable projector outdoors?

Yes, after dark. The Nebula Capsule 3 Laser and XGIMI MoGo 4 Laser have built-in batteries rated for about 2.5 hours. The Samsung Freestyle 2nd Gen needs a separate USB-C power bank for use away from the mains, and the Aurzen Roku TV projector needs a plug socket. Bring a screen or a pale, smooth wall, and keep it out of the rain.

Do these projectors have Netflix and BBC iPlayer?

The Nebula and XGIMI projectors here run Google TV with official Netflix. The Aurzen runs Roku TV, which lists BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, Netflix and YouTube. The Samsung Freestyle 2nd Gen runs Samsung's Tizen smart TV system. App line-ups can change, so check the apps you need before you buy.

Can I return a projector if it isn't bright enough?

Amazon UK listings for the projectors here offered returns when we checked, and the XGIMI listing said it was returnable within 30 days. Return terms can differ for third-party sellers, so check the seller and returns policy on the listing before you order, especially for a Christmas gift.
