Smart Gear Vault graphic: best Tapo smart plugs UK 2026, P100 vs P110 vs P110M vs the P304M power strip

A smart plug is the cheapest way to start a smart home. Plug one into the wall, plug a lamp, fan, TV or Christmas tree into it, and you can switch it from your phone, on a schedule, or with Alexa, Google or Siri. TP-Link's Tapo plugs are among Amazon UK's best-selling smart plugs, from about £8, but the model names are confusing. Here's what the P100, P110, P110M and P304M actually do, and which one to buy.

How we chose: this is a researched buying guide, not a hands-on test. We haven't tested these plugs ourselves. We compared Tapo's official UK product and specification pages with each plug's Amazon UK listing, checking that the model, name and specs matched, and looked at owner ratings. Prices were checked on Amazon UK on 19 October 2026, when all four were in stock. Smart plug prices change often, especially in the run-up to Black Friday, so check the latest price and seller before you buy.

The quick answer

  • Most people: Tapo P110, a basic smart plug plus energy monitoring for about £9.
  • Cheapest: Tapo P100, the same plug without energy monitoring.
  • iPhone and Apple Home users: Tapo P110M, with Matter.
  • TV, desk or games setup: Tapo P304M, a 4-socket smart extension lead.

1. Best Tapo smart plug overall

Tapo P110 (energy monitoring)

Price: £9.00 for one plug on Amazon UK when we checked (19 October 2026), sold by Amazon and in stock. A 2-pack was £15.99.

The P110 is the Tapo plug we'd buy for almost anyone. It's a compact plug-in socket that lets you switch a lamp, fan, TV or Christmas tree on and off from your phone, on a schedule, or with your voice through Alexa or Google Assistant. What sets it apart from the cheaper P100 is energy monitoring: the Tapo app shows how much power the plugged-in device is drawing and, once you enter your tariff, estimates what it costs to run. At the price we found it was only about £1 more than a P100, so it's the better buy. Its single-plug Amazon UK listing averaged 4.5 stars from more than 4,600 ratings.

Key specs

  • Max load: 13A, 2,990W (Tapo)
  • Wi-Fi: 2.4GHz only, no hub needed
  • Works with: Tapo app, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant
  • Size: 51 × 72 × 40mm
  • Own power use: 0.64W off, 1.64W on (Tapo)

Pros

  • Energy monitoring and cost estimates
  • Barely more than the P100
  • Schedules, timers and Away Mode
  • Mini design that Tapo says avoids blocking the next socket

Cons

  • No Apple Home support
  • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only
  • Indoor use only

Best for: Anyone who wants a cheap smart plug and would like to see what their appliances cost to run.
Watch out for: Prices for single P110 plugs move around a lot. If the P110 costs much more than a P100 when you look, the P100 does the same basic job.

2. Best budget smart plug

Tapo P100

Price: £7.99 for one plug on Amazon UK when we checked (19 October 2026), sold by Amazon and in stock. A 2-pack was £14.99 and a 4-pack £28.99.

The P100 is Tapo's basic smart plug and one of Amazon UK's best-selling smart plugs: it was in the top five of Amazon's Smart and Remote Controlled Plugs chart when we checked, and its single-plug listing averaged 4.6 stars from over 33,000 ratings. It does the essentials well: switch devices from the Tapo app wherever you are, set schedules and countdown timers, use Away Mode to make it look like someone's home, and control it by voice with Alexa or Google Assistant. It's the same size and has the same 13A rating as the P110, but it doesn't measure energy use.

Key specs

  • Max load: 13A, 2,990W (Tapo)
  • Wi-Fi: 2.4GHz only, Bluetooth 4.2 for setup, no hub needed
  • Works with: Tapo app, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant
  • Size: 51 × 72 × 40mm

Pros

  • Cheapest Tapo plug
  • Huge number of positive ratings
  • Quick Bluetooth-assisted setup
  • Good value in 4-packs

Cons

  • No energy monitoring
  • No Apple Home support
  • Only slightly cheaper than the P110 at current prices

Best for: Simple jobs like lamps, Christmas lights and chargers on a timer, especially if you need several plugs.
Watch out for: It doesn't show energy use. If that matters to you, pay the extra pound or so for the P110.

3. Best for Apple Home and mixed smart homes

Tapo P110M (Matter)

Price: £9.99 for one plug on Amazon UK when we checked (evening of 19 October 2026), sold by Amazon, with only 1 left in stock. The 4-pack was £38.99, about £9.75 a plug.

The P110M is the P110 with Matter, the smart home standard that lets one device work across Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Samsung SmartThings. That makes it the Tapo plug to get if you use an iPhone and want to say "Hey Siri, turn on the lamp", or if different people in your home use different assistants. You can still set it up in the Tapo app with no hub, and it keeps Tapo's energy monitoring, schedules and Away Mode, plus an auto-off timer and a child safety shutter. It's slimmer than the P110 too. Its Amazon UK listing averaged 4.6 stars from more than 800 ratings.

Key specs

  • Max load: 13A, 2,990W (Tapo)
  • Wi-Fi: 2.4GHz only, Bluetooth for setup, WPA3 security
  • Works with: Tapo app, and through Matter with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings
  • Size: 72.5 × 51.5 × 30.6mm
  • Safety: overload protection, flame-retardant casing, child safety shutter

Pros

  • Works with Apple Home as well as Alexa and Google
  • Use several platforms at once
  • Energy monitoring in the Tapo app
  • Slimmer than the P110

Cons

  • Costs more than the P110 bought singly
  • Apple Home and other platforms need their own hub
  • Energy figures are shown in the Tapo app, not in Apple Home

Best for: iPhone and Apple Home users, and homes that mix Alexa, Google and Apple devices.
Watch out for: Tapo says energy monitoring isn't supported through Matter apps yet, so you'll still use the Tapo app to see power use. Single-plug prices move around a lot: it was £14.98 earlier on 19 October before dropping to £9.99, so check before you buy.

4. Best smart extension lead

Tapo P304M smart extension lead

Price: £29.99 on Amazon UK when we checked (19 October 2026), sold by Amazon and in stock.

If you want to control a whole TV corner or desk rather than a single lamp, the P304M is a 4-socket extension lead where each socket can be switched separately from the app, by voice or on its own schedule. It adds surge protection, energy monitoring in the Tapo app, individual on/off buttons and status lights, and a 1.5m cord. Like the P110M it's Matter-certified, so it works with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings. It was the highest-rated of these four, averaging 4.8 stars from more than 750 ratings on Amazon UK.

Key specs

  • Sockets: 4 individually controlled smart outlets
  • Max load: 3,250W, 13A in total (Tapo)
  • Wi-Fi: 2.4GHz only, Bluetooth for setup
  • Works with: Tapo app, and through Matter with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings
  • Size and cord: 260 × 62.7 × 31.4mm, 1.5m cord

Pros

  • Four smart sockets for about £30
  • Surge protection
  • Each socket on its own schedule
  • Works with Apple Home

Cons

  • 13A limit is shared across all four sockets
  • Bulkier than a plug
  • Energy figures in the Tapo app only

Best for: TV and games setups, desks and home offices where several devices sit together.
Watch out for: The 13A limit applies to the whole strip, so don't plug in several high-power appliances like heaters, kettles or tumble dryers at once.

How to choose a smart plug

Check which assistant you use. All four plugs work with Alexa and Google Assistant. For Apple Home and Siri you need a Matter model, the P110M or P304M, plus an Apple home hub such as a HomePod mini or Apple TV.

Decide if you want energy monitoring. It's handy for finding out what a TV, games console, dehumidifier or electric blanket costs to run. The P110, P110M and P304M all show it in the Tapo app. The P100 doesn't.

Make sure your Wi-Fi has 2.4GHz. All Tapo plugs connect over 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only. Nearly every UK broadband router broadcasts 2.4GHz alongside 5GHz, so this is rarely a problem, but mesh systems that merge both bands can occasionally make setup fiddly.

Respect the limits. Each plug handles up to 13A. Tapo says not to use them for EV charging or appliances with a motor or compressor over 1/6HP, such as air conditioners, and they're for indoor use only.

Buy multipacks if you need several. 2-packs and 4-packs usually work out cheaper per plug, but check: on 19 October a single P110M was briefly about the same per plug as the 4-pack.

FAQs

Which Tapo smart plug should I buy?

For most people, the Tapo P110. It does everything the cheaper P100 does and adds energy monitoring, and when we checked on 19 October 2026 a single P110 was £9.00 on Amazon UK, only about £1 more than a P100. If you use Apple Home, or want one plug that works in Apple Home, Alexa and Google Home at once, get the Matter-certified P110M instead.

What is the difference between the Tapo P100 and P110?

Energy monitoring. The P110 shows how much power a plugged-in device is using and, once you enter your electricity rate, estimates what it costs to run. Otherwise they're very similar: both are the same 51 × 72 × 40mm size, handle up to 13A (2,990W), work with Alexa and Google Assistant, and need 2.4GHz Wi-Fi.

Do Tapo smart plugs work with Apple HomeKit?

Only the Matter-certified models. The P110M and the P304M power strip work with Apple Home through Matter, as well as Alexa, Google Home and Samsung SmartThings. Tapo lists the P100 and P110 as working with Alexa and Google Assistant only. To use Apple Home you need a home hub, such as a HomePod mini or Apple TV.

Do Tapo smart plugs need a hub?

Not for the Tapo app, Alexa or Google Assistant: the plugs connect straight to your Wi-Fi. A hub is only needed if you add a Matter model (P110M or P304M) to a third-party platform such as Apple Home, and then it's that platform's hub, for example a HomePod mini, an Echo or a Nest speaker, not a Tapo one.

Can I use a smart plug with a heater?

Tapo's plugs are rated for up to 13A (2,990W), which covers most plug-in heaters, but check two things first. Tapo says not to use them with appliances that have a motor or compressor bigger than 1/6HP, such as air conditioners, and some heater manuals say not to use timers or remote switches at all. Never leave a heater running on a schedule if its manual advises against it.

Do smart plugs save money?

Not on their own. A smart plug only saves energy if you use it to switch things off: schedule TVs, consoles and chargers off overnight, or use the P110's energy readings to find out which devices cost the most. The plug itself uses a little power too: Tapo lists 0.64W for the P110 when it's switched off, or about 5.6kWh over a year.

Will Tapo plugs work without Wi-Fi or internet?

They need your home Wi-Fi to work, and it must be 2.4GHz, which almost every UK broadband router provides. Tapo says the P110 can still be controlled from the Tapo app on your home network, and keeps running its schedules, if your internet connection goes down.

Can I use a Tapo smart plug for Christmas lights?

Yes, for indoor lights. Setting a schedule or Away Mode is one of the most popular uses for a cheap smart plug. All four Tapo models here are for indoor use only, so don't use them for outdoor lights.
